CAHPS Surveys
Assessing the quality of care patients receive throughout their journey is instrumental to understanding the success of any healthcare system. In order to meet this need, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) developed the Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems program (CAHPS). CAHPS is the first nationally standardized inpatient assessment program whose primary goal is to complement existing survey instruments to improve the quality of treatment provided across the nation's hospitals.
Avatar has been approved by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) to conduct CAHPS Surveys and offers a range of CAHPS products, which can be administered alone or in conjunction with a more customized survey, including:
Hospital CAHPS (HCAHPS)
HCAHPS assesses the quality of care provided to inpatients in medical, surgical, or obstetric departments. The instrument contains 32 questions and measures eight factors of patient perceptions.
Home Health CAHPS (HH-CAHPS)
HH-CAHPS gauges the quality of medical attention provided by Medicare-certified home health agencies. The instrument contains 34 questions.
Clinician and Group CAHPS (CG-CAHPS)
CG-CAHPS gauges the patient's experiences with providers and office staff at their visit to a doctor's office. The instrument contains 37 items addressing safety, medication, pain management, communication, and interpersonal interactions. Supplemental items can also be included. Clinician and Group Child CAHPS (CG-CAHPS Child)
CG-CAHPS Child measures the parent's experiences with providers and office staff at their visit to a doctor's office. This survey instrument contains 58 items.
Patient-Centered Medical Home Survey CAHPS (PCMH-CAHPS)
The PCMH instrument, which consists of supplemental items designed for use with the CG-CAHPS, addresses the following six topics: access to care; comprehensiveness (adult only); self-management support; shared decision-making (adult only); coordination of care; and information about care and appointments. The instrument is comprised of 52 items.
Patient-Centered Medical Home Child CAHPS (PCMH-CAHPS Child)
PCMH-CAHPS Child measures a parent's experience with providers and office staff at their child's visit to a doctor's office operating as a certified patient centered medical home. This instrument is comprised of 66 items.
In-center Hemodialysis CAHPS (ICH-CAHPS)
ICH-CAHPS measures the quality of care provided to patients by hemodialysis centers or networks. Consisting of 58 core items, the survey helps facilities meet Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) participation requirements and drive internal quality improvement. Pediatric HCAHPS (Pediatric-HCAHPS)
Pediatric-HCAHPS measures parents' or guardians' opinions of care for patients younger than 18 years of age in an inpatient setting. This instrument contains 66 items. For more information about Pediatric-HCAHPS, please click here.
